Jazzy remains very popular in France

The market for baby potatoes in France is still growing. Smaller sized, firm fleshed potatoes which are easy to prepare. Our variety Jazzy fully fits this segment. Not surprisingly, this variety’s popularity remains undiminished in France.

Parmentine is a leading potato company in France, producing and selling potatoes for the table market. The company works with more than 400 producers in the regions Beauce, Champagne, Provence, South-West, Brittany and last but not least Picardy, the region where Parmentine originated. Picardy is one of the main potato production areas in France. “Many of our growers are also shareholders in a unique structure”, says commercial director Janka Mougeot-Ludin. “From our five packing stations spread across the country, we serve the French market. About a third of our potatoes are destined for other European countries.”

Productive variety with short cycle

On an area of about 3,500 hectares, Parmentine grows 40 to 50 different varieties. Janka: "Besides, we always have trials with new breeds that offer potential for the future. That's also how Jazzy came our way. After promising trials, the first two hectares were planted in 2012. After that, things moved quickly and the Jazzy acreage grew year on year. Meanwhile, Jazzy is among the top 5 of our most grown varieties.”

Jazzy is a productive potato variety, both in the number of tubers per plant, as well as in yield per hectare. The variety can be grown on almost all soil types. “Moreover, Jazzy has a short cycle between planting and harvesting. This is also very appealing to our growers.” 

Waxy Jazzy for multiple purposes

The early maturing variety has regularly shaped elongated tubers. It is a waxy type with an excellent taste and good texture. The combinations of traits makes Jazzy a great variety for the baby potato segment, an important product group for Parmentine. “Jazzy is a firm cooking table potato and can be used for multiple purposes. We grow the variety mostly for salads. Salad potatoes need to be waxy. The nice washable skin of Jazzy is a big advantage as well. Also for gratins and preparation in the oven or steamer, the firm-fleshed potato is perfect. In addition, we offer Jazzy in special microwaveable packaging. The taste of Jazzy is really appreciated, we always get that feedback from our customers.”


What does Parmentine expect for the future? “The segment for baby potatoes is still growing. There is a need for easy and quick to prepare, versatile and, above all, tasty potatoes. Jazzy fits completely within this trend. The potato variety has now gained a firm foothold with our growers. It is a very interesting variety for our market, now and in the future!"
