Meijer Potato supports school garden with a social function

School gardening is important to create awareness about food, health, and nature in a fun way. We strongly support these initiatives and annually deliver seed potatoes to various schools. A wonderful example is the collaboration between Primary School De Wending in Roosendaal and Heerma State, a care center for people with dementia.

Under the guidance of passionate volunteer Geert – Grandpa Geert as the children call him – the pupils get their hands dirty in the vegetable garden every week at Heerma State. The harvest is used to make delicious dishes at school, and the rest is sold at the school's market stall to purchase new cooking and gardening supplies.

Heerma State also enjoys the school garden: "We often walk with the residents along the garden, pick flowers and cut fresh herbs for the soup. It's incredibly fun to have children on our grounds every week. This also contributes to the well-being of the residents."

Volunteer Geert Deelen believes it is very important to teach children at an early age
how fruit and vegetables grow.
